why do you want to use a lattice to model a character?  is it to help with moving groups of vertices with a falloff?  ie. more a sort of 'soft'/organic modelling?  if so then youd be better off using a proxy.  the maya help file would probably be alot more helpful than me for that though as i cant remember much, that and i think proxy modelling went through some changes in recent maya versions.  another alternative to poly-modelling with a proxy, is simply modelling in sub-divisions, which is basically the same thing.  read up on both of them dude and figure out whats best for your project.
