Nice stuff there. I remember playing around with blender when i first started , making a gummi man thing like most beginners who never opened a 3d app .Although the interface was bonkers and made me scared of 3d I had fun.  Don't dismiss any tutorials though even if you do them and don't finish you still gain valuable skills.  keep it up !  ;)

yeah i get all my stuff from mwave they're cool. i'de recommend building it yourself though , it's not that hard and you can add cool gismos of your choice too.
About those specs , it's a nice build but don't neglect the motherboard and PSU , especially the motherboard. I recommend anything from the asus p5 or p6 family and any of Gigabytes latest models. A 500-700 watt PSU (1000 if your gonna install the beastly GTX or Radeon HD49 series).
Apart from that everythings fine with a 64bit system.  :)

One thing i've learnt from building a few pc's is that quality counts , don't skimp and by cheap brands because those parts don,t last.

good luck !!!

Sorry about not being eager before but i'll definately go for this one. Where is the "good guys" store located so i can hand in my resume. I've been looking and applying for work for months after quiting my abysmal pizza delivery job, would be nice to actually get one.
Count me in i'll go ASAP maybe this weekend.  ;D

wow!! wrong it's directed by first timer Neil Blomkamp and produced by peter Jackson.
This guy was gonna direct the halo movie before it got cancelled , what a shame , he 's pretty good. From what i've deduced from trailers , it's a very different sci fi movie from anything i've seen before in terms of setting , story and technique.
I can't wait to see it!! :)

Another Maya version!!! , man it's so hard to keep up with new features with these very rapid and frequent releases. This version does by far have the biggest change though , with built in compositing and a 3d tracker!!! thats awesome.

I wonder when we all have to start changing over  :)

Thats quite a pretty good build you got there. I'd say it's a perfect choice of parts for what it's made for.

In my opinion a quad is better than a dual core even if it's slow because you can overclock and squeeze every ounce of performance juice out of it , don't forget improved multitasking, plus there really cheap quads available If you know where to look.
Thought about rendering ?  the more cores the better I reckon :) !.

2gb of RAM for 64bit vista ? I'd up that to 4 later on cause RAMs gotten surprisingly cheap really quick and Maya can sometimes suck alot of memory.

9800GT is ok , just don't expect Crysis to like it with everything cranked at that 1080p of your monitor, but i bet you don't like gaming too much so good choice.

You got a Razer mouse!!! I think it's the best brand, they look pretty darn sexy as well. I've thought of getting myself a boomslang one day so i can rack up more frags online.

I'd overclock that E8400 but 3.00Ghz is fast enough.

Overall great selection , I think you should give it a pedestrian name like Sally or Chewbacca the 15th.

Hi Guy's I'm Edwin Masige , mostly known as Ed or Eddy but you can call me Eddynator if you want, it'll boost my self esteem :). I'm a second year animation VFX student. Tall, very dark and handsome 8), mostly quiet and unverbose but very hard worker.

I'm mostly big on 2d animation because I've been doing nothing but drawing stuff on everything for years now, I'm also a big fan of early Diney classics as opposed to their latest CG fests, as well as anime . I didn't know what animation was really until stumbling into the course , I'm glad i did , hope you guys are too.

There'll be Hard work ,ups and downs.....lots of downs but its all about the great experience you gain in the end so just have fun and relax when you need too. If u need tips just holla!!!

The Mobo is anything from Asus Maxim Series or any mother board with latest chipset e.g P35, X38 , G33, AMD700 series. With one PCE-E slot preferrably because i'm trying to keep costs down.

Thanks Luke for letting me know that you could use gaming cards , that saves me alot of money because i have a HD3870 in my PC right now with a P5KC Mobo that supports DDR3 so i can use it in the meantime .I'm a gamer but i don't buy what i don't need because it wastes money, I research thoroughly first , In response i said i'll get it 2nd and 3rd year after finding out more about what you guy's use , I just another want a cheap workstation.

The powersupply will probably be around 400-800w from Corsair , Thermaltake( favourite!!).Zalman , Coolmaster.

HDD's will be SATA 2 from WD or Seagate which are good , but i like Samsungs because i've had one for two years and it has not failed me ounce.  Had one generic IDE HDD drive with XP that died so i'm abandoning that.

The processor recommendation is good I'll look into Quad cores especially the Q6600 which has gone down in price , I just didn't decide on that one because i thought the newer processors were faster or had new instructions that worked better with demanding applications. Also looking into the phenoms they don't look too bad and are cheap.
Looking into the Quadro F370 looks cheap but could be deceiving.

Any way buying one pice at a time to build.

thanks for you help guy's

Hey guys , this is Eddy (first year).  Just wanting suggestions on what components are the best to build a new midrange workstation to practice or use 3D production software packages that are part of the course. (Maya, 3D max e.t.c). I intend on using the PLE editions first.
Here are my future specs:
Intel Dual core 8500 @ 3.2Ghz
3Gb DDR 2 800 - 1200mhz
ATI Fire GL V3400 - V3600( anything higher is too expensive!) - no Quaddro's (ATI fan)
500GB Sata HD
any SFF case.

I'm planning to have it by mid 2nd year, 3rd year when I earn up enough.

Is it good or really bad?
