Title: Games Games Games
Post by: cheeseninja2002 on April 27, 2007, 10:15:46 PM
Well, I guess this board need to start somwhere...

Anyone with past, present or future games which you found to be enjoyable/looking good just post them up... and if you can define their genre and platform... on the topic of genre anyone know what genre ICO is? 3rd person puzzle/action?

Heres just a small list of games that I found enjoyable for any of you who feel like feeding the inner nerd;

ICO - PS2 (http://www.icothegame.com/)
Shadow of the Colossus - PS2 (http://www.shadowofthecolossus.com/)
F.E.A.R. - PC - FPS (http://whatisfear.com/au/)
Dawn of War - PC - RTS (http://www.dawnofwargame.com/)
Oblivion - PC, XB360, PS3 - 1st/3rd person RPG (http://www.elderscrolls.com/)
Civilization 1 - PC - Turn Based Strategy (http://www.civilization.com/) (Personal Favorite)
Diablo (1 and 2) - PC - RPG (http://www.blizzard.com/diablo2/)
OKami - PS2 - RPG (http://www.capcom.com/okami/)
Kingdom Hearts - PS2 - RPG (http://na.square-enix.com/games/kingdomhearts/)
Half-life (Everything 1, 2 and expansions) - PC - FPS (http://half-life2.com/) (a bit of a fan boy)

I think thats enough for now, and I know most of them are mainstream but for those intersted play away... and i do realise I've stayed away from old school games, I'll rattle off a couple if people show an interest in this thread.

On the up and coming side of things I must say I'm behind a little. There are 3 that have caught my eye;

Quake Wars - PC - FPS (http://www.enemyterritory.com/) ( site requires flash 8 )
Age of Conan - PC - MMORPG (http://www.ageofconan.com/)
Manhunt 2 - Wii, PS2 - DEATH... DEATH ALL ROUND  (http://www.rockstargames.com/manhunt2/)(getit before its banned)

please add any games to this be it mainstream or obscure.

Sounds about right. But instead of the action half, it's probably more of an adventure game.

I'm a DSer and have been off the large console systems for night on seven years now (as may be evidenced through my absolute noobidity in HALO - you know who you are), so basically most of the games I'm looking forward to are on the handheld.

Final Fantasy XII: Revenant Wings - NDS (http://www.square-enix.co.jp/ff12rw/)
Heroes of Mana - NDS (http://www.square-enix.co.jp/mana/)
Touch The Dead - NDS (http://www.eidosinteractive.com/games/info.html?gmid=178)

Games already out that I want to get include:

Osu! Tatakae! Ouendan - NDS (http://www.nintendo.co.jp/ds/aosj/)
Elite Beat Agents - NDS (http://www.elitebeatagents.com/)
The Phoenix Wright Series - NDS (http://www.ace-attorney.com/)
Trauma Center: Under The Knife - NDS (http://www.atlus.com/trauma_center/index.html)

Unless the prices in Oz come down, I'll probably resort to buying them on the net since it'll most likely end up being cheaper.

I also recommend Solitaire. It is awesome.

i have to admit im hanging out for grand theft auto 4 and res evil 5 on the 360... two great series!!! Altho the wii does have a few cool games coming out like my sims, elebits (or is it eledees now?) and cooking mama.. another game i am looking forward to umbrella chronicles on the wii (heres hoping it hasnt fallen through yet).. tis part of the res evil series and i'm a bit of a res evil fan girl  :D the main i've been playing recently is guitar hero 2.. sooo cool!! altho very hard i cant play anything but easy :(

has anyone played hotel dusk room 215 on ds? i've been eyeing it off at work but dont know if i should bother...

hmmm i think i want too many games atm...

A few game reviews gave it okay scores of 75 and above (I'm using the "out of 100" method here), so it might be a worthwhile purchase. The only real negative criticism with regard to the game was the 'sluggish pacing' (IGN and Hyper agree on this). Heck, even if the story wasn't good I'd probably buy it just for the art style.

And yep, it's Eledees apparently. Ew.

been wanting to buy shadow of colossus and okami for ages!
Okami is DEFINATLY worth it, the same goes for SOTC but its a hard one to find. IMO ico, SOTC and Okami are the three games every1 should play on the PS2 (It hurts me to know that clover studios is no more), genre wise i really dont know what they fit into... rpg? but if your really interested in playing either SOTC or Okami I can lend you a copy some time (like i said EVERY1 needs to experience them). So if your interseted reply.

One thing I did forget to mention is that Rockstar have done it differently this time, instead of withholding most information on the game and just teasing us with shinny pictures and poster art they've actually given us some insite into what the hell its about.. they didn't plan this... it got leaked XD. so check out the site if your intersted.
Another up and comming game for those who just feel like killing for the sake of killing theres Postal III (http://www.gopostal.com/pr/postal3.php) - 360, PC - FPS, again getit before it gets banned... unfortunatly its schedualed for an 08 release. I did also come across a very interesting find for you Postal fans... they're making a movie... I don't know if that makes me happy or shiver all over.
check the trailer here (http://www.gopostal.com/pr/postal3.php)

They're also planning a Trauma Center for the Wii (T C: Second Opinion) comming late this year (I hope). no site found, just hit any game review site to check it out.

gah, there i go again with the rants... I'll stop now

p.s. Can't wait for GTA 4

I really wanted to play animal crossing! :$

If you really want bang for you buck, wait till Big W (or any other competing retailer) has another random Nintendo DS Lite + Free Game promotion. It could potentially save you $50+! Animal Crossing is addictive, and because time still goes on when you're not playing... well let's just say that my world is filled with weeds. I haven't touched it in ages.

By the way, Lair (http://www.us.playstation.com/Lair/default2.aspx) on PS3 looks absolutely amazing. It makes me want to get one (but the price of the damn console makes me nauseous).

I played warhammer MOC for a bit (on release) but just got sick and tired of all thos bugs that i gave up, I'm guessing they  actually got round to fixing it up? And I'm guessing your playing a demo of or beta for cell Factor since the release is set for May 8 (Unless it was leaked). Cell Factor just makes me wanna spend all that money on a PhysX card... XO all those object flying through the air with such realism.

Last little rant before I go back to work and stay away from this newly rediscovered addiction is HALF LIFE 2: EPISODE 2 ..... got pushed back again till mid- late 07. Thats means that Team fortress 2 and Portal get pushed back with it XC
If only they stuck to their origional release date I'd be happy..... mid 06, I guess at least Valve are consistent.

God, I've been playing too many games lately... Really been cutting into study and working, but oh well!

What I've been playing:

I've only just completed the main quest of Oblivion and I'm still playing it. God it's a great game.

What I'm waiting for/want:

There's no way in hell I'll be able to afford all of these, but I'll still wait on it. I really need some decent DS and Wii games, after completing Zelda... Seven days after it was released :'(

Ah games..

Well here we go, this essentially covers everything;

- Halo (1 & 2)
- Prince of Persia (1-3)
- Splinter Cell (1-4)
- Unreal series (Unreal games, Tournaments and Championships)
- Gears of War
- Zelda series
- Diablo (1 & 2)
- Warcraft 3
- Dawn of War
- FarCry (computer original - not the crappy console versions [abominations >:(])
- Max Payne 2
- Oblivion
- Black
- Turok series

uhh, and anything Star Wars (complete nerd - Jedi Knight series, KOTOR I & II, Rogue Squadron series, Battlefront I & II, Republic Commando, Bounty Hunter, Shadows of the Empire, Bounty Hunter, Episode I & III).

So as u can see im a man of many faces. But not Playstation..

And never Playstation  :P

I'm still playing Twilight Princess. Gone are the days when i can have all nighters, just to finish a game.
The only all nighters i'm pulling are doing work.

The issue i wanna raise is, do any of you have heaps of games that you have hardly touched but just don't get the time to? It's sort of a permanent situation for me.

Am I the only old-school gamer here?!
I have a SNES with me here at University (gotta love eBay!)!!
Amongst my old-school games though are...
- Sid Meier's Colonization (DOS, turn-based)
- Super Metroid (SNES)

And new-school; I'm a text-based gamer... No third-person shooters for me!
I'd much rather play NHL Eastside Hockey Manager 2007 or Football Manager 2007!!

Dragon Ball Z Budokai Tenkaichi 2 - Wii

Dear GOD it is sweeeeeeet, If you played any of the others think of it as the good bits from Tenkaichi 1 (very few) mixed with Budokai 2 and a Wii-mote so you can BBBWWWWAAAAA and presto... thats it.

And it hurts me to know that GTA 4 has not been anounced for the PC yet, so its either never comming to PC or we'll see it about 8 months after... once they've released an expansion or 2.

yeah some oldie's in there huh... And I just can't wait for BioShock and Halo 3.

It hurt me to find out that Bioshock got pushed back till the end of the year (PC) along with Halo 3 and Timeshift.

and I've found myself playing some oldies the last week or so:

Resident Evil 3 (pc version)
Kirbys Adventures
BF 2142
Civilization 1 (can never get enough of it)
Super International Cricket (Best sporting game PERIOD)
Doom 3
Stair Dismount
Shadow of the horned rat (Yes I still have a machine running '98')
UT GOTY
DBZ B T 2 (Wii finally have a multiplayer game thats good)
and finally.... Risk 2!! (who needs a board and other people when you've got npcs)

Gah, I just can't wait for them to release Golden eye on the Wii.

I feel for ya brotha

50% of the games I own are incomplete, its a mix of everything tho, no time, I'll play it online and I'm fixed or once i get halfway through a game somthing else cool comes out that i just gotta have!!

I still need to complete the main quest in Oblivion, need to finish single playa stalker, hit 70 in WoW (prob wont tho, it makes me shiver everytime i play it), DoW and Winter assault single player (finished dark crusade at least)... then comes  the consoles. I need 3 weeks of nothing so i can just waste it on finishing them (and they're all soo cool)

Well somtimes i think collecting the games have become more a part of my hobby than actually playing them.
And reading about games online, i do that WAY more than play them.
For some reason i find the gaming industry interesting to follow. More so than playing. Maybe it's because it's real?

If you want some real game nostalgia read about the good old games on the Amiga, the C64 and dare I mention it the Atari 2600!
The Amiga, renowned for its awesome graphics.. stereo sound could pack some of the best all time games including cinematics onto a 3.5" disk!

Check out these classics from Cinemaware.

That article/blogger has got it absolutely right though; Mac had their chance and constantly prefer to cater for the relative 'minority' group that makes graphics/wants to be different.
Ah well...

So tempted to pull out my SNES right now; could do with playing Mario; but that'd be procrastinating.

I never owned a com64 (too young) but still played the emulator, I just can't get over the awesomness of "The shadow of the beast". It just amazes me PERIOD
Was it the first game with parralrex scrolling or was itone of the first?... i heard on of the two somewhere, either way this game (series) exploits everything a scroller has to offer IMO.

Still nothing can beat Kirby... the simplest character... the simplest story.. the AWESOMNESS gameplay. They need a Kirby on the Wii (along with their belated Metriod and Mario games), For me that game alone would sell the system to me (apart from the fact i alred have 1... and DBZ BT 2 can out early).

GAH! ATM its Tomb Raider 10th an or bust.. I just have a crave for a new Tomb Raider

p.s. I'm quite drunk so dont hold me accountable for what I say.... PEWNI PEWNI POWEMI ROCKS!!!

im after stuff that is really pushing the boundaries of what makes good games, both visually and gameplay wise.  if its any indicator of the sort of stuff im after, im hanging out for the new unreal tournament way too much!

doesnt really have to be unreleased stuff either, as i really have no idea whats been coming out for the past year or two, there may have been some really sweet stuff come out in that time...

YEP, for some reason games don't give me the same feeling as old snes games like Donkey Kong country and Harvest Moon did.
Not even the Wii and it's new control scheme changed how i feel. Maybe i'm just 'getting old'. So glad for virtual console on Wii (that's when they actually release the games i want)

oh I loved the original harvest moon, such pretty graphics, for such an old game. I do so love the eyecandy, thats why I like 2d games, like money island series, I mean the early 2 were pretty low rez, but still looked pretty swish, 3 was AWESOMELY beautiful, sadly I think it was ruined when they went 3d. Such...hideousness...

The 3D nature of Monkey Island 4 wasn't too bad. But I was looking forward to pointing and clicking again which was sadly replaced my the more 'action-y' use-the-keyboard. I found an Australian website selling quite a few of the old puzzle adventure games like MI3 and (I think) Grim Fandango (http://www.gameswarehouse.com.au/longpage.asp?gameid=2539#) (yay!) for ten bucks each. I think I'll get them soon. Haven't checked but if they have Twinsen's Odyssey too, then woohoo!

SNES was undoubtably one of the coolest consoles.

I was a sucker for the Zelda games on them, as well as Metroid...

I really think discovering consoles either

a) ruined my life

or

b) brought meaning to it

Im not really sure which tho.. Perhaps both

=).... well

If your after shinny shooters to look forward to theres Bioshock (http://www.bioshock-online.com/index.html) and  TimeShift (http://www.timeshiftgame.com)(official trailer comes out friday 4th around 9amish), Both SHOULD be out already.... now we're lookig at the end of the year for both.
Theres also FEAR 2..... release date hasn't been annonced yet so its a long way off, and Crysis (http://www.incrysis.com/), again release TBA.
For something coming out shortly thers Cellfactor (http://www.cellfactorrevolution.com/_the_revolution_starts_may_8_/index.html), coming out may 8. It's one of the few games released that utilizes the PhysX card (http://www.ageia.com/physx/index.html)... just watch a CellFactor trailer and you'll witness the sexy. Theres also Halo 2 for PC coming 17th of may, nothing really new just some extra Multi maps and slighlty shinnier graphics. The downside of it (if your an XP user) is that its Vista Exclusive.

Recently I havn't played any outstanding PC games... STALKER (http://www.stalker-game.com/) was a bit of a let down imo, all hype and some coolness.
Hope thats enough... I know theres more I've played recently but... memory loss ftl.

Did anyone uses to play a DOS game called something like James Pond; I think it was something like that; Mario type platform game but you were this fish?! I'm gonna have to do some research into it; find out what the name actually was... Fun little game!

DOS games were the best!

:'(
I un-installed Doom 3 to prevent distractions (yes, I went to such extreme measures!!) and now I've realised the discs are at home (in Brisbane...) I'm gonna have to call home and get them sent out...

But let's just say that lately I've been playing the latest in the long line of venerable games called Command and Conquer - C&C3: Tiberium Wars - and thus far It's been awesome. A return to the roots to be sure.

On another topic, I just got Final Fantasy III for the DS, obviously to prepare me for a weekend full of study...
Many Final Fantasy fans here? I can already tell you this is measuring up to be a great game, very retro feeling but still good looking.

I'm a bit of a final fantasy fan.. although even tho i didn't mind x-2 i must admit its kinda killed the fan-girl in me... i'm just not a fan of the whole chapter thing and I've heard they've continued it in 12... they had such a good thing going why did they feel the need to "improve" it? my blame rests on enix.. if only squaresoft hadn't bothered with the first movie i bet they never would of started this whole chapters thing... >:(

i liked the first movie... am i like the only one who did?.

in any case, never been to much of a final fantasy fan, found the whole thing so boring and lost track of the game... im a strategic/first person shooter player... nothing unwinds you better than sending wave after wave of loyal subjects at someone to destroy them or unloading the trusty 12 gauge into some ungodly beings guts.

i liked the movie... unfortunately it was the downfall of squaresoft as it just didn't make them enough money to warrant its making.. as far as first person I'm not really a fan i prefer to see my character, the only game I've really tolerated first person view was red steel... i just prefer to see my character and the type of games i like couldn't really have a first person view... well maybe res evil and silent hill... but it just wouldn't be the same

Okay, I am a HUGE Lucasarts Adventure game fanatic; especially Monkey Island, my favorite videogame series of all time. Anyone wants to talk about these, please, contact me immediately.

Classic lucasarts (Curse of monkey island, Day of the Tentacle, Outlaws, Dark forces, Jedi Knight, GRIM FANDANGO, Sam and Max, X-Wing vs Tie Fighter) rocks! However when they teamed up with pandemic to produce Battlefront, I was very dissapointed (especially considering that Pandemic made Battlezone 1 and 2 which all in all are pretty innovative games)

Battlefront II went on to be a complete let down, playing too much like a console game in fast forward, and Empire at war had a couple of features that were cool, but let down by the overall chunky interface of the land battles.

I have to admit, I love the fact that Empire at war has a multiplayer campaign mode. It gets extra points just for that. And its an RTS campaign, not turn based, extra points. Also the fact that the game went for both land and space battles makes it innovative by itself. With abit more streamlining the game could have been gold. Sadly it's still a little chunky.

Really that could be said for most recent Lucasarts games. Take Knights of the Old republic 2. Number one was great fun. Number two felt rushed (Which it turns out it was) Story arcs that dont quite arc, entire planets removed due to cuts in production time.

I hate games companies that rush things. Anyone play Dungeon Lords? Now that was a rushed game!

I doubt it's Enix's fault; after all, they originally owned Dragon Quest and they didn't do the same thing with them (unless you include the Slime based game on DS), and anyway, they're showing A LOT of support for the DS; the FFXII 'sequel' is going to be released on the DS, so at least it's not going to be completely the same, and Dragon Quest series is being continued exclusively on the DS. They've also shown a lot of interest in the Wii, so they may be the shining RPG beacon for us Nintendo fans...
Also, has anyone else heard that FFXIII isn't going to be PS3 exclusive? A gutsy move by Square-Enix... Apparently a lot of Sony fans are in an uproar...

yeah... i think square realizes.. more people will by a 500 dollar console and a 100 dollar game (360) than buy a 1000 dollar console for a 100 dollar game.

Ah, Jedi Knight was my introduction to first person shooter games. I can remember going into Jedi Speed and having the whole scene warp back towards me, God that was cool. I also liked the extensions, though academy, for all its awesome fighting scenes, and the integration of two and dual-end lightsaber, kinda felt like a disappointment.
Man, it'd be awesome if they continued that series now; what with the advances in technology and physics and all.

Yeh it was my intro to FPS as well.

I have no idea if theyr planning 4 more JK games, seems inevitable really..

But they have got a game in the works for the end of this yr on PS3 and 360 (and DS + PSP) - 'The Force Unleashed'. One of their many 'big things' for the 30th Anniversary of SW. I dunno if u know anything bout the game, but 4 those who dont theyr focusing more on getting the force powers u can use to sumwat represent wat they do in the films. The story line is set in between Eps III & IV, and u play as Vader's "secret" apprentice.

And they're using LucasArts schmancy new 'Euphoria Engine' for the physics of the whole thing.

So really u could call this the next JK, or at least this would b like wat JK4 would b like.

Wow... that game just looks like an excuse to torture Stormtroopers... I mean, they give them everything so they can 'feel' it, and have a sense of self-preservation? Aren't these guys meant to be PROTECTING the galaxy?
It just seems to put more fun into killing them, instead of, you know, fighting them or anything.

Dent it? I mean, that's pretty annoying and all, just got your new tank, looking all nice, physics are working amazingly, and bam! Someone gets a sniper bullet, on the bonnet (or whatever it is on a tank), right where it shows.

Besides, I always thought that F.E.A.R was more of an inside environments game. How the hell would stuff like tanks work?

In relevant to the topic news, I've been playing through the old Fallout games. Anyone else remember those retro post-nuclear turn based RPGs? The S.P.E.C.I.A.L system was daunting to me at first, but now I've really gotten used to its functions...

man they won't mess it up by putting in cars and things... they'll just nerf unarmed ALOT *shakes fists*, put in a cool LAZER that is RED!!, make more character models and re-create refinery so that it lags MORE in DM.
That and remove the asp cause no1 uses it =D

Well well well,

Surfing the net 2day i came across a little add that surpirsed the hell outta me. Call of Juarez (http://www.coj-game.com/), I played the demo about 8 months ago was a fun little game with some really cool features in it... nothing revolutionary but still  a bucket of fun. It's being released.... today. for anyone who don't know anything about it; a FPS set in a western cowboy era, you can play as a preist, an indian and I think one other (but couldn't use in the demo). The one thing that made me enjoy the demo was a feature involving depth of feild, when you aim the camera zooms (varies on diff guns, pistols, snipers etc), and depending on what object is over the cross hair depends where the camera is focused... it just lifts the atnosphere and makes it fell like a real cowboy flick.

one more game that has surprisingly snuck up..... MANHUNT 2!!! JULY 10!!!... makes me love rockstar again despite not having announced a PC release for GTA4
