« on: January 19, 2009, 09:15:20 AM »
Yes, the studio that brought the world Battlezone II, Destroy all Humans, the starwars Battlefront series and Dark reign II, among other cool games, is now in deep shiznit.

EA has been doing severe headcount reductions, and Pandemic has been the latest studio to feel the sharp blade of ouch.

Ok, you are at uni and hopefully you will be making a career out of what you are doing.

Recently I've come across afew documents that will help give you an idea of what you can expect to be earning once you get out there in the "real world".

As I come across more docs I will update this thread, but for now these should give a good idea of reasonably up to date figures.

Pay rates, industry figures and other random stuff. The pay figures (towards the end of the doc) are pretty accurate- they have gone up a little since this doc was published.

Good game ind info site:

Award pay rates (Don't freak out too much. These are the MINIMUM wages)

Gen Media industry Alliance: (for some reason excludes games. Bah)

This contains an interesting link to a film technitian contract, which gives a good idea of how it all works.

Looking for work? Here is a good list of places online that both Kyle and I have found to be handy when cruising for employers:
This is a recruitment site that advertises jobs for specific clients like Plastic Wax and Team Bondi. The jobs listed are mainly for the games Industry but I have also seen some VFX positions listed from time to time too. So far they have been pretty good to me, and have hooked me up with an interview with Blue-Tongue. Worth a look for junior positions.
Its a good site that offers a decent search of game jobs throughout the world. Main problem is that a recruitment company called Interactive Selection seem to be representing most of the game jobs in Australia and they don't really like dealing with anyone without at least 2 years of industry experience (3 rejections for this reason alone! -Jeebuz)
Digital Labourers Federation. The thanks on this one go out to ORMO who introduced me to one awesome mailing list. The DLF sends out job notifications, useful links, interesting discussions,  and other things to fill up your inbox. I would suggest having a Gmail account to sign up with, as its only through the Gmail conversation archiving that I have managed to keep track of everything that comes through. On the good side, the job notifications are frequent and give a good idea of what is available out there. Most of it is for the Sydney region, but I have seen some Melbourne things come through, and one of two for SA.
Kyle pointed out this site- its a directory of jobs, news, games in development and events regarding Australian and New Zealand games developers. Features a sign up option where you can be notified of things that you want to know about. A good jumping off point to familiarize yourself with who the developers are 9out there and what they are looking for in a junior graduate.

If anybody has any more good sites to take a look at feel free to add them to the list!

Hey Guys, there's gonna be a LAN on the 24th at south campus, starting 4:00. Not sure on numbers yet, but there are tables and chairs galore, so chances are you will have alot of nice space to yourselves.

Games played will include:

Call of Duty 4
Day of Defeat
World in Conflict
Gun Game (counter strike mod)
Dawn of war+expansions
Company of heroes
Warcraft III

IF you have the latest patched versions of these games, bring the patches with you, otherwise nobody can play. And that would be sad.
