Sounds like something I would say  ;D (I think I did somewhere... maybe on Facebook).  Give it atleast 3-6 months before moving across, and ALWAYS ensure you're using Autodesk products on tested and Approved Compatible/Qualified hardware / OS.

Looks like you're not alone on this one either:

Regarding Maya 2012 and OS X 10.7

The second point sounds like a dug up reason to make the case not to install. I haven’t had a single kernel panic with Maya and it runs just as smoothly (and unsmoothly - this is Maya after all) as usual. It’s actually more stable thanks to Apple’s GL fixes. The Radeon cards kernel panic with Maya 2012’s Viewport 2 Depth of Field is fixed and Mudbox’s kernel panics with the Quadro 4000 Mac edition are gone
.

I was going to say check the Hotfixes. If it takes down the whole system is a BSOD or CSOD? (Colour Spining Wheel of Death)?

BE VERY CAREFUL changing the Environment Variables on your system as any errors will and can stop your system from booting.

Also to clean up and script 'correctly' use and set variables at the top of a script to point to the folder you wish to 'render' from and add that variable to your commands.

When I get more time I can show you what I mean if you want.

If you want to start looking into Nuke, you can access a PLE (Personal Learning Edition) from the Foundry website - http://www.thefoundry.co.uk/products/nuke/ple/.  As for Adobe After Effects, the only way to get this is by paying for a educational license, but first grab the 30 day trial from the Adobe website if you haven't used this package before - I'm pretty sure they have a trial for AE, just can't get at any until Version 5.5 is released about 2 weeks.

Corbs: All but one doesn't use a external display.  It may also be an issue with DVI and not VGA? (Rowan: Have you tested this?)

Also are you using a 'Apple' mouse?

Andrew is currently on leave - not too sure on the correct date of his return.  You could email him, but dont expect a response until he is back on board doing Uni related work.

Alternatively you could call the school office (Katrina should be in on Wed-Fri) and she can adivse you on the correct method of contact or procedure to find out what is needed to be done.

Why didn't student central help you?  What did they say to do?

No references, just heaps of information from the main CPU used in apple products just being released into second generation and with Apple normally refreshing their iMac range around the start of the year, it makes sense that they would include this new product in their refresh.  It might not be a whole new 'design' more of a change over of the internal hardware for a bit of a power boost and better heat management.

They'll announce the iPad 2 before this anyway - I think thats coming in Feb at one of the Apple conferences or trade shows.

Apple never pre announce any updates, they think its cool and trendy to screw with people and force businesses to budget on rumour and prediction on what they might do - Not exactly a fan of this method, especially if you trying to purchase around $150,000 worth of iMacs and they are updated 3-6 months later to a new version, that will be current for the next 3 years and the ones you bought are now only current for about 2 years. So not good for managed lifecycles.
