Title: Road Trip?
Post by: Hages on May 30, 2007, 12:33:01 AM
Its early days and staff have more urgent priorities to address but we think it may be worthwhile taking a road trip to Melbourne next semester and wonder if the 1st year Animation and Visual Effects students are interested? This offer could be extended to Multimedia students if there is overwhelming support. What for? The Pixar: 20 Years of Animation Exhibition (http://www.acmi.net.au/pixar.jsp). ;D

Oh God yes. Who would turn down the chance to see an archive of Pixar production?
That, and it'd be really nice to get back to Victoria for a while... I don't know, it's something in the air here....

I don't know, it's something in the air here....

Or lack thereof... :D

But yes, we're now on the second page, so could this almost be seen as a demonstration of "overwhelming support"?

I hate to be the party pooper, but i want to be a bit practical about it...
How much will this event cost? what transport are we talking? hiring a bus or people drving themselves? Accomodation? etc. I know if a big group goes it will all end up cheaper but yeah... I would love to go but im not sure my funds will support it.

If you can get the trip to $200 each for a return flight and hostel accommodation that would be awsome.
I reccomend the greenhouse backpackers, right accross from central station.

I just went to the exhibition while I was down in good ol' Victoria (although now it doesn't really seem all that good, but a lot older for some reason...).
Anyway, had to say that the entire exhibition is very, very worth seeing. You can see all sorts of preproduction works, including artwork for character and scene design, sculptures for modelling, storyboards, animatics and something that I'm not sure if I've seen before (or at least didn't pay attention to) called a colourscript, which is basically a storyboard but with an emphasis on how colour sets the mood for the scene (please berate me if this is something common and obvious).
And most amazing was a thing called a Zoetrope, using characters from Toy Story 2 and a strobe-light, and using real models to give an illusion of movement - a great way of emphasising just what is done in animation.
I ended up picking up the book of the art, so give me a yell if you want to have a look, but it's nothing to seeing the fullsize, original article in real life.

(PS, it's good to have the internet again!)

Good work to go see it!

Within the week we will have confirmation of travel arrangements for Week 8: Thursday 11th and Friday 12th October (as stated previously (http://wvpa-mm-serv.riv.csu.edu.au/forum/index.php/topic,698.msg5134.html#msg5134)) for those who would like to see not just the Pixar Exhibition (http://www.acmi.net.au/pixar.aspx) but also participate in the Downunder Digital Industry Forum (http://www.acmi.net.au/pixar_digital_industry_forum.aspx), Pixar Family Tree (http://www.acmi.net.au/pixar_family_tree.aspx) and Downunder Digital: Animal Logic and Happy Feet (http://www.acmi.net.au/pixar_animal_logic_happy_feet.aspx) session.
