Digs for Australian Comedy Gold at SPAA Conference

As part of this year's SPAA Conference, the Comedy Channel is offering up to $25,000 towards the development of a new TV comedy concept. The winner will be announced at the Conference being held at the Sheraton Mirage Resort on the Gold Coast from 13 to 16 November.

The Comedy Channel is inviting Australian writers, performers and producers to submit programme ideas for a 13 part half-hour comedy series. The Comedy Channel's Manager and Programme Manager will look at all submissions and select a total of six finalists to participate in this exciting new initiative.

All finalists will be required to register for the Conference in November where they will have the opportunity to pitch their comedy concept directly to a panel of judges, including Foxtel's Head of Television, Brian Walsh and Head of Entertainment, Graham Burrells.

Producers are invited to submit a proposal of no more than three pages in length. Application forms can be downloaded from or

The winner will be announced at the Comedy Channel Pitch Session at 11am on Friday, 16 November.

Seeking Digital Art submissions - Deadline closes Friday 21st September:

Do you have some digital art that you want seen?
Digital Fringe is seeking submissions of digital visual material to broadcast over the Internet as a part of the The Age 2007 Melbourne Fringe Festival: September 26 to October 14.

We are calling for digital art works to display on all screens. These may be stills, animations, video art, short film, abstract pieces, audio, …whatever!

This material will make up part of the general stream which will play on all screens throughout the festival and can be accessed online.  Artists will retain the copyright of all works under the Creative Commons licensing scheme.

Digital Fringe is an open access web based digital arts festival that runs in conjunction with The Age 2007 Melbourne Fringe Festival.  Connecting to Melbourne and further afield through numerous screens, from the monster screen at Federation Square to a host of other screens around town, Digital Fringe will pop up in the most unlikely places.

$2000 Youth Digital Panoramic Art Prize

Horse Bazaar, Digital Fringe and Wild Animus present an exciting new youth digital arts prize.  Make a video clip 20 metres wide!

$2000 will be awarded for the best panoramic digital art piece made to accompany a Wild Animus track.  The prize will go to the screen-based content that best uses Horse Bazaar’s unique panoramic projection system.  $500 runner up prize.

The panoramic projection system created at Horse Bazaar is inspired by the huge panoramic painted canvases of the 19th century. The system uses modern technology to create large-scale panoramas in digital form. Six projectors are tiled together to create a seamless 20 metre digital canvas that envelops the bar. Casting aside the traditional 4:3 screen format, visual artists are asked to produce digital content at an 8:1 ratio.

Download Wild Animus tunes and artwork, and make your piece by compiling your stills, animation or video in Watchout for the Horse Bazaar projection system.  Come in and test the show in the space if you are able.

SPAA Fringe in partnership with Avid Australia is pleased to announce a brand new scheme, which will allow five teams the opportunity to produce, edit and live stream a short film at SPAA Fringe in October in Sydney.

Avid Australia Fast Flicks is a competition that will showcase how technology and ideas can be created in real time, on professional equipment and distributed immediately. The competition offers anyone who is passionate about filmmaking the opportunity to win fantastic prizes, develop working relationships with like-minded people and showcase their work to thousands of people.

The competition is open to all aspiring filmmakers who are registered delegates of SPAA Fringe. Five scripts will be selected to participate and either individuals or full compliment teams can apply by submitting their scripts for consideration.

Garrick Simeon, Marketing Manager at Avid Australia, says "Avid Australia is really pleased to be holding workshops at SPAA Fringe. We want to pull back the covers to show why Avid is the industry-standard on Mac and PC. At the same time, we want to help filmmakers get their work in front of an audience and have fun in the process."

Geoff Brown, Executive Director at SPAA, said "SPAA Fringe is the place where out-there film projects and their filmmakers can come in from the cold and learn about the mainstream industry. Fast Flicks provides the benefit of accessing unparalleled professional development through our partnership with Avid Australia which will take their projects to the next level."

A synopsis of each of the selected scripts will be launched onto the SPAA Fringe website where delegates will register their interest online to make up part of the team. The person who submits the script will "hire" their team from the registered interest. Teams will be made up of Writer, Producer, Director/DOP and Editor.

On the first day of SPAA Fringe each production team will be given a camera. Each team will have a dedicated SPAA Member "EP" who will be on-hand to give practical advice. An Avid Australia representative will be available to assist with the editing process.

Each team will have the two days of the conference to complete their film, to be screened at the closing session in front of 500 delegates and live streamed. The films will also be emailed to a database in excess of 20,000 contacts. Prizes totaling in excess of $10,000 and including Avid Media Composer Software for MAC or PC valued at $7430 and a return airfare to QLD plus SPAA conference registration valued at $1800 will be presented to the winning team immediately after the screenings of the film. The winning film will be awarded to the team that most successfully utilises the technology and expertise at hand, while also telling a great story!

One of our own students on Wagga Campus of CSU requires three units of blood every two weeks at Wagga Base Hospital. These fortnightly blood transfusions are keeping this student alive and studying at CSU. There must be other students and staff also who regularly require blood, in addition to emergency cases.

Each week the Wagga Wagga Blood Donor Centre needs approx 160 donations to keep up with hospital demand.

Winter can have a huge impact on blood donations with weather and illnesses meaning many people are unable to donate.

So, we are calling on you to get into the blood bank ASAP.
